Last time I kept ferrets was over ten years ago. I had a hob and a Jill. The Jill was regularly "Jill jabbed", as was recommended at the time. As my old Barbour still smells of dear old Tom ferret, I am considering a pair of Jills this time. What's the latest on how to deal with the potential health problems of barren Jills?

I used to keep three Jills and 1 hob as pets. They were more entertaining and better company than any cat or dog (no offence meant to anyone). I used to have the Jills jabbed as soon as they came into season otherwise there was a strong chance they would die if not mated...I always knew when they came into season as they would become very protective of me and swing from my earlobes...very painful.

Jills get along fine together, I found it better if one was a little older than the other so one would mother the other and keep the younger in check

I used to get my Jill jabbed too, but I didn't get the impression that was still the done thing?

Easy peasy if it is, if I can find a willing vet

Edit: just looked up the club I used to belong to and yes, they are still organising group rates for jabs.

Don't know who I was talking to on the club stand last summer then, she'd never heard of jill jabs

My vet was great with the ferrets, I only had to phone him up and say one was in season or not well and he'd always fit them in straight away...no messing even if it was a vitamin jab or check up. I've always said I'd love to open a ferret rescue home....good luck if you get ferrets again (I really envy you even though they trashed my home )

I think you are very brave to have had them in the house

I'm in no rush - probably not until next year. The idea is that they will do some work. If that didn't work out, pets would be fine though

I've got 2 hobs - I don't mind the smell (but, then I have billy goats, lol!)

I wont ask you if I'm strange, because I most definitely am, but I quite like the smell of ferret. It brings back many happy memories.

this is my first year of keeping ferrets. i have 5 atm 1 hob of last seasons and 4 jills 2 at 6/7 mths old and 2 at 4 mths ish. (need to look up). i had a couple jill's but neighbor let them out of hutch. its my first season of rabbits so am getting prepared reading all about everything etc. need to find a good vet tbh . if you get some next year and if i have a litter sure can get you some.
