My ex had a decorating business and he advertised in the local church mag, cheap to advertise and he got a lot of work from it, and nice to support the smaller publications, but yes once he started word of mouth got around. It was the only advertising he did.

I had the mis fortune to be in hospital the other day and was talking to a patient who was in the building trade. The one thing he said that stuck in my mind was that when a job was too big he had built up a small net work of other jobbing tradesmen available to help when he couldn't cope with a job/jobs, and he would help them when they needed assistance; money obviously changes hands, but there is something to be said for having help when you need it. He mainly dealt with police stations!
