We are selling our much-loved camper van, because we can't get Nenna's wheelchair and kit in it.

It is a 1986 Renault Trafic AS with a high-top. It has 55,000 miles on the clock and has just started first time for the first time since the New Year.

It has an rocket stove that keeps it very warm, a fridge, a two-burner gas hob, a cold-water sink and a high-tec composting loo that runs on a battery.

It has MOT til August and needed a couple of hundred quid's worth of welding to get through last year.

I am about to put six months tax on it.

Things that need fixing:

- The in-to-the-cab fan has stopped working
- There is a slight leak that means in very wet weather there is dampness in the passenger-side rear foot well. This is definitely not coming from underneath.
- The 12v cig lighter isn't working.

I haven't tried to sort these yet, I think the first and last are very simple, the middle one might need a door seal.

I am going to wash it tomorrow and take some photos. I will be listing it on ebay with the bits fixed for £2,750, but am open to offers for someone who would like it as-seen.

Viewing welcome!

Petrol or diesel?
I know someone who was after a campervan. I suspect this one will be too big.

Sorry, should have said.

1.6 Petrol, manual gearbox and works out at about 25p per mile. It's the gearbox with the fifth gear bolted on as an afterthought.

That seems a small engine for the size of van. Does it manage on it OK?

Yes. You don't break any land-speed records, obviously, but so long as you are happy to chug along, she does fine. We take her up on to Exmoor and the top of the Quantocks regularly with no problems.

Are you sure?

Thats less than 14 mpg which seems a little low.

Sorry, typo, I'll alter that. 25p a mile. In a non-excursion week I put seven or eight quid in the tank and do about thirty miles.

I must get Richard to service my car. In moments, he's almost doubled fuel efficiency.

I can improve it without even servicing it.

1, drive with a slightly slower top speed, even 5mph will help
2, accelerate gently
3, decelerate gently
4, plan further ahead, improve your anticipation
5, change up sooner than you think you should, say 2k rpm with a diesel & 2.5 to 3k with a petrol
6, dont try to hold your speed when going up hill, allow it to gradually drop off, you can pick it up on the down hill section
7, plan your journey to allow extra time so you dont need to rush

That should add about 20%+ to your mpg.

PS, dont coast in a modern car as it will then use fuel to keep the engine running. On the over run the ECU will shut all fuel off.
