I watched a repeat of River Cottage Autumn on the TV last night and it gave me a timely kick up the bottom as to some of the kind of things that we can be doing at this time of year. I unashamedly enjoyed my hour with Hugh in front of the wood burner.

Thoroughly invigorated ( at least for the time being ) this morning, just as soon as the rain stops perturtling down, I'm off to pick sloes to add to the gin that the Tesco home delivery service will be dropping off this evening.

Mrs Tiggywinkles bush has been very productive this year.

and a good size too.

The heavy laden Blackthorn tree was actually at the bottom of my good friend Mr T's garden.

Blimey! I have hunted high and low (literally) all around our hedges and only managed to get about half a cereal bowl full. Well jealous

We have 2 gals of the stuff quietly doing in a demi john. Nice big juicy sloes again this year, picked a couple of weeks ago. Best one so far as been blackberry whisky. Wish we had picked more of them.

Do you think it's just weather, or some management issue? The blackthorn in my new hedges have been very productive in the past, but almost nothing this year. I wonder if the last few years of neglect have affected them?

No! Not management! At least I hope not We have had our smallholding for nearly twenty years and over the years we have had bucketfuls to a cupful, and we have pretty much neglected them all the time. In fact some of the best bushes I have ever seen were on a railway embankment where no care was taken at all. More likely what sort of Spring we had. That's my story and I'm sticking to it

Ours were ready in September this year....nothing left on the trees around here now. Quantities were a lot lower than last year.
