I think I'd better dig up last year's spuds. Went up the allotment at these dreariest of times. Looked a bit shabby. Probably need to spend some time renovating bits and pieces.

Funny you should say that, I was thinking of keeping them in the Polytunnel. I suppose the foxes would get in, though. Still, there's the greenhouse....

Shan, I don't mind a few quid on unplanted seeds. But I do get disappointed.

WW, you could keep them in a cage in the polytunnel.

I don't mind the unplanted seeds, it's the ones that are clearly never going to work in my fantasy of a warmish summer and soil that is not mainly composed of rock and clay.

I want them free range (although as they are minute most sensible cages are palatial). My main difficulty is that the foxes won't find out they are safely confined until after they've ripped the polythene to shreds, though. If I don't trap them soon, the bloody greenhouse is going to fall into a crater.

That is why I suggested a cage. Being small there are too many predators so being in a large cage gives them the best chance of survival.

Pah, you never know, till you try!

You can't really keep quail outside. If I cage them in the polytunnel, the foxes will just tear the polythene to bits, and then discover they're in a cage. It'll fox the foxes, but the tunnel won't survive. I think I'd better get on top of the foxes before I try.

Can't you just leave the polytunnel open a crack so they can get in through the door like civilised predators?

I could put a fox flap in (wouldn't that be a bit mean to both parties?!)

A guard llama is the obvious solution.
It'll need a bigger flap though.
