Play store is where you get applications, either all of them with google or just ones Amazon list, they have improved on that score but its a limitation I don't like.

I almost understand, but I'm an old bloke and fail to comprehend the need for 'apps'.

It puzzled me that you wrote "which I see as a very big downsize" (which I took to mean approval), but it has since occurred to me that you probably meant to put 'downside'

No, no , no. Only other people's choices have limitations. Someone will recommend a hamster powered ubuntu tablet soon. They're only a little bit more expensive than things that work and will eventually be able to do everything,

Ubuntu is rubbish for tablets .

I've just swapped from it to this thing with windows ten - apart from the axis of evil aspects of it, it's lovely. Such a relief not to have to field strip it to get it to talk to the printer ...

Hey, leave me out of this one.
I'd only suggest to get something cheap so it matters less when it gets sat on.

Tesco Hudl 2 was good enogh in this respect that I was going to order it after my next pay day - then they discontinued it.

I think it is about picking your ecosystem - Apple stuff is gibberish to me, having never owned an i-thing. Android lets me do more stuff with the caveat that it's my responsibility not to cock it up!

Yep I was going to get a hudl2 before they discontinued it hence my hunt for a alternative.
I am going to be doing a lot of stuff for work so I quite likecthe idea of having the Windows 10 on there so I can use it with my air drive.

what does you wife pay apple for, Pilsbury? I only ask because I don't pay for anything extra, as far as I know and wondered what I might be missing!

Also, I have sat on my iPad. Several times. And Jenna has had one since she was three, and so far completely failed to damage it in any way. I think they are fairly robust (and covered under my contents insurance)

she pays what ever Apple decide the price will be for an iPad when the one she has slows down to nothing and however much an iPhone is when it's time to change it.
Granted these are choices to buy sometimes but as Nick said the devices become slower ans slower and clogged up with memory hogging things until they basically don't work, with Apple you are tied into buying only from Apple but with Android I can buy from any manufacturer.

Ah, I see. I can see your point. I realise Apple products are seen as more expensive, but I think people fail to take into account the amazing tech support you get for no further cost. (I also think they make superior products and you get what you pay for, which is largely a matter of opinion of course!)

But it's like saying a Jaguar is so much better than a Ford Fiesta. Of course it is. But if you only have the money for the Ford Fiesta it's irrelevant how much better the E type is.

This suggests that it is not possible to delete the memory hogging things to get it back to speed. Is "why?" a daft question?

It is the operating system. And they don't let you wind it back. It's possible but not easy. It gets bigger and requires more processing power with each update. They do include plenty of new features each time but if you go up, it slows down.

You can avoid the updates sometimes but then anything you haveon there such as banking apps migyt not work if your security certificate is not up to date.
All the apps get updates as well, maps, YouTube, sky and so on so as Apple memory isn't expandable at all they slowly eat into what you have available.
It's the same for phones but I can upgrade my Android one every couple of years for free and get a phone that might be a year old but still with ample memory, free iPhone upgrades come with hefty new contracts normally.
I pay £16 a Month for 100mjns calls, unlimited text and unlimited data because i resist getting a brand new phone and having to sign a new contract....
the unlimited data is a pretty rare beast these days as companies know the apps are all getting more data hungry so thsts where the money is to be made.
Add to thst free calls and messages over data with what's app and others then the minuets and texts are pretty much redundant

You can avoid them, but as Pils says, you then lose functionality and also support. It's entirely possible to run an iPad from several years ago on its old software, much as it's still possible to run an old PC on Windows 98. But you'll struggle to do many useful things with it.

It's part of the business model, and you can accept it or not. The hardware and software is arguably the best, but you have to pay to keep it running, pretty much.

Thanks Pilsbury and Nick. I think I'll try and struggle along without a tablet, and with a 'phone that just makes and receives calls and texts.
