Slightly bigger than a sparrow. There's always at least two flitting around the garden. They're pretty tame, too - whenever I water the flowerbeds they follow me around snapping up insects that get flushed out.

They look rather pretty, and good photos too. Sounds like your equivalent of our robin as they come looking for insects that get turned up gardening.

Birds are singing a log more at the moment and both they and insects seem more active. Monday, which was sunny, we had loads of bumble bees in the woods or several different varieties, which is encouraging. Also saw a couple of brimstone butterflies, probably a comma, and an unidentified white one. Yesterday was slightly cooler and more overcast, so a lot less activity.

We were in the Stinchar Valley yesterday.
Our friend has an aged ash tree in his garden with two generations at least of spotted woodpeckers..it was great to hear them drumming and see them.
Plus the usual chaffinches, great tits, sparrows, blackbirds etc.
The bad news is that a red squirrel disease (not the pic spread by greys) has worked its way up the Doorway and has arrived there probably in 2018/19....so no more red squirrels in the garden and even a grey was seen in the nearest village a couple of days ago.

We're having some land cleared by a logger. All the brush left behind has been a magnet for the local deer. They don't show up at good times for photography however

wildlife and hunting can overlap if needs must but it can be impolite to mention that in the wrong place

Sad about the squirrels Gz. Hope they manage to re-introduce reds once it has passed. I hear woodpeckers quite frequently, but can't usually tell where they are coming from exactly.

Slim, wildlife very rarely does come at the right time. Son thinks it does it on purpose and would thumb its nose at us if it had thumbs.

We have just had a report of a fallow deer near us, so have to keep an eye out for them, as the last thing we want is a herd of them as they are so destructive. So far they have mainly kept to the eastern side of our main road, with only the odd one spotted our side.

Reminds me of our walk on Monday. Group of us standing in a sparse clump of trees saying "It's behind us" "No, it's over to the left" "I thought it was on the right" etc etc. Turned out it was almost directly above us (which is what I thought, he says smugly!).

But are you sure your ears are working properly? Jaki and I used to have arguments about the direction of sounds, and she had hearing loss in one ear (not of all frequencies}. I have some hearing loss particularly of high frequencies.

I assumed it was. They can be quite hard to locate, particularly as they will insist on hiding the other side of the tree that you are on, so you can hear but not see them.

They do that too. Wildlife seems to delight in being difficult for humans. I suppose it gives them some quiet amusement.
