If someone were, hypothetically, contemplating the thought of taking up knitting as a means of keeping oneself busy in a productive and useful manner, where would be a good place to start looking for useful information, such as how on earth one begins to transform a ball of wool into something vaguely wearable. Or, indeed, how to hold the sharp pointy things without removing one's eye or that of the dog?

Hypothetically speaking, of course

I couldn't knit at all until someone (actually someones - I'm a slow learner!) showed me at the first skills share. Oh, I drove up to Ali's to get her to cast on for me once or twice too.

So if you can wait that long you will definitely get started there. Otherwise, look on Ravelry and see if there's a group near you.

Mochyn and Sally-in-Wales are working on a series of articles for absolute beginners. Hopefully the first will appear before you do yourself serious injury.

dunno how you feel about getting out and about just yet - but a local knitting group might be your best bet.

That's the idea - but only as a future thing. Not sure a panic attack whilst armed with knitting needles is a particularly smart plan. Especially after last night's mad drive across Somerset after wibbling about going into the co-op to buy milk

I went for a children first knitting set. Small needles and pretty coloured wool and great pic to show me what to do.

It's traditional to start with a scarf

No complicated patterns, no need to count stitches, no need for increasing or reducing, and easy to undo if you make a mistake.

I would agree with the knitting group though, there's nothing like actually having someone there to ask when you get stuck.

Good luck!
