This may be a silly question, but...

I planted a Czar plum and Lincolnshire variety of gage in March, in too much of a rush with new garden. I have now realised that one of them really needs to be grown against a fence so we have room for a damson which I think definitely needs to be a tree, not wall-trained.

So can I move a tree just planted this year to grow it against a fence? I assume I would move it in winter - but I would also need to prune it a bit to start training. And if it's a plum I need to prune it right now - or a few weeks ago, right?

A few weeks before moving it, go all around the drip line with a spade to the depth of the spit.
This cuts the lateral roots and gives the tree a chance to branch off replacements.

It is best to prune a plum or gage in July; you might just get away with it now. Agree it is best to move it during the dormant season.

No hassles, you can start pruning now, I ALWAYS run out of time when pruning so often end up pruning stone fruits outside of when I'm supposed to. Just make sure it's dry and sunny when you prune if you can't get it done soon.

Thank you for those replies. Perhaps won't prune today - dry and sunny at intervals but rain clouds loom!
