We have some tiles that we want to use in the bathroom, which is great as they were free, we know that you can tiles over the top of tiles but what about areas where there is a gap - for example the window sill is tiled but below it there is say 6 inches of wall before the next tile, would you just use more adhesive behind the tile ?
TIA

What are you worried about, them not sticking, or them being a thinner layer than the others, as a cosmetic issue?

Any reason why you're not stripping the old tiles off?

I've only tiled a bathroom and kitchen before so experience is somewhat limited. However, even with the ready mixed instant grab adhesives I wouldn't want to get it on too thick as the tiles might sag as the adhesive dries - you'll have a bed at least 6mm deep rather than about 2mm. Levelling them might also be tricky.

If you can't strip the old tiles then I think filling the gap to bring it level with the old tiles would be best although I'd seek advice from an experienced tiler first.

You might need to score the old tiles with an angle grinder to give them a key for the adhesive.

Personally I would strip them off & replaster the wall then tile.

We rent and we have only had permission to tile over old tiles thats why the old tiles aren't being removed. Scoring is a good idea to help bonding. The tiles we have are larger than those on the wall but its just the section below the window sill that is untiled - so the butting up to those tiles on the window sill is what concerns me - do I just put more adhesive on to pack it out a little ?

Thick adhesive slumps.

Either patch with cast off/old tiles and then tile over, or patch with thin plywood or fix a baton to the wall to support the tile until it sets.

I think you need a flexible adhesive.

If you are renting then you would normally be expected to hand the place back at the end of the tenancy in the same condition, allowing for fair wear and tear, as it was when you took up the tenancy.

Do you have written permission to retile? I would get written permission to prevent any disputes later.

As for retiling, there are adhesives that do not need a key or scored surface to stick to.

Regarding making up surface levels, depending on the depth, you could use some filler, or pack it out with a piece of plasterboard, or bonding plaster. The various plasters will tell you on the bag the depth they can pack out in one application, you may need to do layers.

good luck

Think about how you will finish the edges as they will be two tiles thick.

I would speak to the landlord as taking the old of first will make a much better job than sticking new on old.
