I can't post a photo just yet due to technical reasons. But I've just found hundreds of mushrooms in a field next to work and suspect it might be a honey fungus.
Found: yesterday
In a pasture field on or very close to stumps of oak trees.
Stalk - regular cylindrical not swollen like a bolete. |
Stalk colour: lightish brown but regularly white throughout on inside.
Smell: smells just like a shop bought mushroom.
Gills - just like a muchroom you'd buy in the shops. Edges of gills yellowy brownish but between the gills white.
Cap circular and in form quite flat but turned down around the edge. Colour is dirty yellowy browny but darker in the middle. Older shrooms have caps which begin to split. Colour inside - uniform white. Size. Up to about 10cm tall and 8cm across the cap.
Can a honey fungus be confused with anything dangerous - assuming it is one? Also I've read that they are edibe but eat on the cap, boil for 10mins at least. Also some sites mention avoiding alcohol before and after eating.

Good description but I'd still rather see a photograph (sorry!). You don't mention of they're in a dense cluster, as though they are all issuing from one source. Have you checked out the photographs of Armillaria in Roger's? https://www.rogersmushrooms.com Needless to say, but promise me you won't experiment till you're 100% sure you're on the money with the id....

There are multiple clusters both on the tree stumps themselves and not too far away - feeding on the rootes perhaps. I shall try to post a photo tomorrow and WILL NOT eat them if at all uncertain.

they look like honey fungus; when they are that old, only caps are edible ,cook for at least 12 mins and do'nt eat more than 6ozs

Thanks for the advice. There are squillions of them so I should be able to harvest lots of young ones. If I cut them will they resprout?

they may resprout but it would'nt be because you cut the litte ones!!!
