Gareth had a vacuum sealer for christmas, (this one I think https://www.lakeland.co.uk/15349/Seal-a-Meal) and I'm on a quest for economical bags for it. Any recommendations anyone? I suspect it will mostly get used for sealing down meat in marinades to extend their life in the fridge.

I gather a machine like this is best for occasional rather than heavy duty use, but that should be ok for him to find out whether he gets on well with using it

I use one like this for my sous-vide cooking. I use rolls of 'bag' which are cut to the necessary size.

I got mine from SousVideTools

If you are careful, you can re-use the bag.

Also, when you put food into the bag, first fold out-and-down the top edge (which you will seal later) so you don't get any food on it so it will seal better.

You need textured bags, not the ones Martin uses, I get from these people https://www.culinaryinnovations.co.uk/osb/showitem.cfm/Category/50/
but the postage can be quite high in small numbers, if you just need some to get started give me a shout and i might have 50 or so 15cm x 30cm pouches knocknig around

Lidl sell some freezer bags which are of the grade of plastic sufficient to use with most vacuum sealers--your machine should tell you the spec and it is on the side of the bag box. I have been using them for 2 years now with no problems--I just have to cut the bag when I want a smaller one. They work out much cheaper.

We have been buying ours from Nisbets but the last time I was on the Weschenfelder website, I noticed they had bags and rolls. The rolls worked out quite economically.
