I'm trying to figure out gloves - I have to say - it isn't exactly *easy*

mutter mutter grumble .... go across the room and collect said semi-stitched glove from where I have thrown it in a fit of pique...

Ooo, I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who throws things!

I'm trying to stitch them out of leather. Drafting things to fit nicely is rather hard work!

Stitching?
My Grandma was a very capable knitter of socks, cables and lacey cardigans etc., but not gloves. Despite being able to knit socks on four needles, she would only use two for gloves, so they had seams up the fingers. Mum, in her younger days, complained about the seams, and Grandma told her to knit her own then. So Mum, who goes wrong all the time when cabling, won't even try lace anymore, and is hopeless at making up her own patterns, knits really nice gloves on four needles.

Noooooo - I don't want to make mittens and I don't want to knit woolly gloves (nice though they are).

I want to sew beautiful leather gloves, with decorative seams, and long tapering fingers .....

Gloves with quirks - and fourchettes - bespoke, properly fitting gloves....

Well, that sounds like a lovely idea. I have often wished someone could make me a pair that fit. Mine always have an inch hanging of the end of each finger.

So what's wrong with leather mittens....

There are a few interesting-sounding books on ABE (try "gloves, "glovemaking" and "glove making" as keywords).

My mother used to have some beautiful pairs of gloves (probably still has) in soft brilliantly coloured leather. Colours pieced together and laced with leather stitches. I think she bought them in Paris. Can't wait to see what you make.

At the rate I'm going there won't be anything worth seeing

I do like leather mittens. But I set myself the challenge of gloves, so mittens would seem like a bit of a climb down !

I'm sure there will. The next thing we'll know you'll be doing a City and Guilds glove-making thingie and winning prizes.

When you get established there's a lovely old glove factory building rotting away here. Quite a few associated bits and bobs in the local museum too. Frewen the gloveress. Sounds good!

I'd love to do leather gloves one day.

When there are more than 24 hours in the day though.

Ditto. Small hands and short fingers. Really frustrating.
