Pooch has had the runs all over the upstairs of the house followed by blood all over the downstairs
Just rung emergency vets, initially they wanted her straight in, but when I whimpered at the quoted £109 initial consultation cost for a surgery on the far side of the city, they put me on hold and said to run to my own vet first thing (handily I can see into their waiting room from my bedroom )

I guess I just need a reassuring pat on the shoulder. My closest doggy friend is one who'll rush her pup to the vet for a sneeze, which I'm not criticising, but it doesn't help my perspective

I would look at general condition of dog, a little blood goes a long way but check the mucus membranes, eg eye socket and gums. If the dog looks weak and they are pale I would go to the emergency vets straight away but if they are pink and dog looks well I would prob hang on until the morning.

Also depends on whether it carries on or was a one off.
Ultimately your call

No repeats yet, she's gone a little bit "old lady" which she does when not feeling well (i.e. a bit sluggish, not completely in-yer-face, but still aware of what's happening and still shadowing my every move).

Well, it's not like I sleep well anyway so it makes no difference if I watch her all night.

triage for blood loss,vigour,comfort etc.
it could be minor or serious
more than a trace of blood from the gut i would consider in need of immediate attention

a trace is staining ,if it looks like blood or the stool is black it is not a trace ,more than "messy" probably needs urgent work

might be many things but if it is more than a trace the outcome is probably time dependent

my advice is shop around for a night vet

hugs pooch

What breed of dog is she, NMG? Is she eating well, does she look well, any reoccurrences? how old is she and is she whining at all, or restless?

Middle aged collie, I took away her food, she's a bit sluggish but still watching what's going on and following me around. We're about to go for a gentle stroll/loo break.

She's not recently had a season has she? If so it could be a pyometra - please get her checked otherwise you could end up loosing her like I lost my girl earlier this year

Pooch jabbed (antibiotics) and given a probiotic paste that I have to try and get down her throat

Brighter this morning but not quite herself.

I'd quite like a nap now - was still awake at 3:30am and up at 7:30

Indeed. Nell and I have met the NMG pooch - she's lovely.

Although I did read
