Our carrots always used to be like that but this year they're fabulous! Don''t know what the old chap's doing differently, but it's working really well.

errr, right at the biginning of june I think, they were the BBC dig in seeds

Hmmm, you should sow earlier to get bigger carrots, but I waslate with mine (around June as well) and they've come out a lot bigger than yours. Could be the variety I suppose. Main things I find help is to make sure they are watered during dry spells and to thin them out if they were sown too closely packed.

They look very much like our carrots last year which were grown in a tub.

I don't think the container you grew them in was deep enough (just guessing)... the fine tap root would have hit the bottom and stunted growth.

I grew Chantery carrots in a box that the council gave us foe recycling newspapers in, a decent crop considering the size of the box. We now have a wheelie bin for recycling stuff so I collected a few of the boxes from neighbours - they are very useful.

That certaily sounds like it might have been our problem. Thanks, I shall try a deeper container next time

In fairness to the carrots, the Dig-In seeds were chantenay ... so meant to be Fairly Small ... ... but even so, those are SMALL Hope they tasted good, Sally!

Agreed. I grow them in a box about 6 inches deep - I get lovely little baby carrots 3 - 4 inches long. Perfect for cooking whole. I prefer them like this to the big fat maincrop carrots.

Agreed. I grow them in a box about 6 inches deep - I get lovely little baby carrots 3 - 4 inches long. Perfect for cooking whole. I prefer them like this to the big fat maincrop carrots.

I grew my Dig in Chatenays in a bucket with home made compost. They were about 4-5 inches long when I pulled them

I wasn't going to read this thread as I thought I would be soooo jealous that some-one has HUGE carrots when I, like you, am perfecting the micro-carrot
