I have seen a photo of an electric hydraulic ram, that was bodged up to pack tyres full of dirt for building tyre walls. It filled into the hole of the tyre with a couple of pieces of iron pipe welded to each end, and moved about four inches when turned on to pack the tyre. Sorry could the link fairy help here?

A shorter link (sorry mod) and here is a description of it
A slightly longer link

What kind of machinery am I likely to find broken down with such a ram on it? Or can I buy them off the shelf? I don't know where to start.

Rams are easy to come by, it's the "power pack" thats the slightly more expensive it. Try screw fix or similar car straightening hydraulics. I use Enerpack gear. Good stuff
