we've been given a coop on freecycle that needs doing up. we intend to repair it, repaint it and add a run but before we do that i need to clean it out.

apart from scraping out the dried on poo from the floor and hosing it down, is there anything else i should be doing to it/using to clean it?

should i use paint on the inside? anything i should avoid doing?
is there a minimum width that's adviseable for a pirch?

many thanks

Disinfect it, preferably with Poultry shield as this will kill any red mites.
Creosote or Cuprinol the outside walls.
Nest boxes need to be 9-12" square, perches 2 x 2" planed timber -
allow 8" per bird.
Allow each bird 4-6' square of space in the run as a minimum.

AVOID roofing felt! Use Onduline / Coroline (Corrugated bitumen roofing)

You are on the top of a slippery slide of hen keeping

thanks for the tips.

i've spent 2 years convincing hubby to get hens and then this coop was posted on freecycle so i ceased the oppotunity and had him collect it.

he can't change his mind now (not if he wants his new shed, anyway)

Spray the inside with Jays or similar.

I've recently done my two broody coops with Jeyes as the previous occupants had Marek's. Poultry shield sounds good too, but I already had Jeyes.
If the coop has RM you will find out when you pick it up!
