I think we need a new programmer for the CH/Water as I cant switch the central heating off without switching the water off as well

Just wondering what make/model others use/can recommend. I would like one that can be programmed to turn water/ch on at different times (the one we have now switches both on at the same time unless the one is turned off or is on constant) and preferably more than 2 time settings.

Thanks.

Stick with a simple one - we have an all singing and dancing one and it took 10 mins to reprogramme when we wanted the evening heating to come on later.
Had to re input all 28 time settings ! ( morning on and off, evening on and off )

I would second that! the simple ones are best. When ours needed replacing a few years ago we called out the heating guy expecting the new one to have to be wired in. Imagine my shock when he pulled the old one out like a big plug, and stuck a new on in its place- £40 call out fee plus parts!!

I have a Honeywell programmer that is fairly simple to us and seems reliable.

Why do you think it is the programmer rather than the the motorised valve ?

I didnt think of it being anything else to be honest... when I turned the heating to 'off' it still came on at the timed settings, and then I found that the only way to stop the heating coming on at all was to turn the water to 'off' as well as the heating.....

Also a couple of weeks ago I found the hot water had gone very cool despite coming on twice a day (with the heating). I gave all the hot water buttons a press then back on timed and its been ok since (I thought it was just the buttons had got a bit 'sticky' (for want of a better word) from not being used lately).

Do you think it could be the motorised valve, and not the programmer, then?

If you check the actuator valve you should be able to tell. Set your heating to CH, W and 'both' and check where the lever on the valve goes with each setting. I think ours was stuck on the middle setting so we got red hot radiators when it should've been water only. I only know this because I've just had mine replaced otherwise I wouldn't have had a clue...

I am unable to check the motorised valve, as there is nothing to see... we used to have one that moved to heating/water/heating & water depending on where the programmer was set... however ex hubby replaced it a few years back and its just a grey box with nothing on it...

I hadnt thought of the possibility of it being that, though and I think it was a similar problem which led to it being replaced before.

Is there any way I can check if its that, bearing in mind nothing moves etc when I change the programmer?

Thanks for all the help/advice

You can test the function of a motorised valve by hand. Actuate the valve and see if the pipe to the hot water becomes warmer or the pipe to the CG system.

Depending on what is calling for heat that feed pipe should get hotter.

You may also feel a vibration in the housing as it changes, although this may be as the system changes in temperature and clunks and bangs generally.

I put the hot water on earlier and the central heating came on as well. Central heating seems to do the same as the hot water, whether I want it to or not... Which means I have to have the heating on in order to have hot water in the taps....

Some older CH systems don't operate separately. I managed to programme mine last year to turn off CH during the summer. I can't remember how I did it now.

You have to have the HW on before the CH works on my system. Although it is a state of the art controller, the system is 1980s.
