After having half a cow hide under the bed for a year or so I thought it was time to start making some leatherwork items. Previously I've made a couple of knife sheaths and now I'm getting round to making other items such as axe and billhook sheaths, pouches and belts. I've ordered a few more hides, dyes, threads etc so I'm raring to go.

As I know we have quite a few members who make things from leather I'm curious to know where you get your ideas and plans from? I've read through a couple of books from the library and although they are ok most of the projects aren't really what I'm after.

I mainly get my ideas from searching the web, saving the odd picture here and there and then figuring out how to do something similar. Does anyone know of any sites to look at or any good books that contain plenty of project ideas in?

And if anyone has any ideas for using up small off-cuts of leather please shout!

We made pouches to put over axe heads - keeps them clean and safe.

I tend to use welders gauntlets now so no need to toughen them up. I have made a dog-tag for our dog which is much nicer than metal or plastic ones, I could make a few key ring tags but there's only so many one needs.

I'm not sure about a thimble but you've reminded me that I wanted to try a small tube type thingy, a bit like a stumpy cigar tube, with a flat seam that'll require learning a new technique. Just posting the idea up so I don't forget.

leather cases made like that can be very nice for protecting camera lenses or other items.

Here's my first attempt at a pouch (some would call it a small possibles pouch, others a brownie's purse, I'll just call it a pouch). I'm quite pleased with the outcome although there's plenty of things to improve upon. The mottled effect is intentional, honest, and it's hand dyed 3mm veg-tan buffalo belly. All in the materials probably cost about £3.

It's a really beautiful thing in the flesh in my biased opinion (he's also made a little drawstring bag which is just like the kind of thing you fill with gold coins and bang on a table while calling for wenches and beer). I am now trying to think of leather things I need that he can make me...hmm, possibly could have worked on that phrasing better...

What I've been looking for is a leather pouch purse similar to that described by Bugs, but closing with a solid brass ring, rather than a drawstring.
