Now I hesitate (very briefly ) to take issue with the DS Soft Fruit God, but last year I lost about half of my red cherries to birds, but had practically no losses from the white ones. Purely anecdotal, I am sure, but my blackbirds really weren't interested in the Merton Glory.

Maybe they respect the heritage of the John Innes institute or the fact that it's one of the last "London" cherries too much to mess with them?

Our birds (of any colour) have no respect, not for nuffink!

Cherries, like plums, need a certain degree of softness to be worthwhile.

Here's my cherries on my unnetted tree.

I've allready posted a picture of my bird deterent on photo comp post. I don't loose any cherries to birds.
Tree is a Stella I got from Homebase 13 years ago.
Some cherries are edibal now but will be best in a few weeks when they will be bigger and purply/black in colour.
Not kept records but crop can be measured in bucket fulls - 4 maybe 5 - tree is only 10 foot tall but bushy.
Best thing I ever planted.

Today's harvest data entry will be ridiculous, spent time with builders, then looking at non working sprayer before going to work, got into work and spent 2 hrs discussing ongoing support issues with one of our IT companies. What do I remember now???
