I currently buy my milk in plastic bottles from the supermarket, as doorstep deliveries are not early enough for me. I wondered whether it would be more environmentally friendly to buy the milk in Tetrapaks, which I believe can't be recycled, or the plastic, which can. I'm guessing less energy goes into making the Tetrapak, but could I be wrong there?
Do the tetra pak type cartons have a plastic component (like a lid) or are they just paper? If they had plastic bits I'd prefer to buy the plastic bottles and recycle them. I'd also try and buy the bigger cartons/bottles as that would mean less packaging overall than the smaller ones...

I think you are wrong there tetra-pak can be recycled infact tetra-pak have won awards for their environmental stance. Its just that not many councils actually do a tetra-pak collection
You can flatten them and then send them to a mill in Scotland who recycle them
To receive a batch of labels to send Tetrapaks to be recycled, phone
Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment on 020 8977 6116
thanks for the info. what a hassle to recycle tetrapaks -have to sent in a cardboard box and pay the postage! Think I will stick with recycling plastic bottles!
