We've been harvesting Summer Sun for a few days now, lovely tasty huge cherries but ALL split. The local farm shop sells these but they spray them against splitting

What do they spray them with? glue?

A cherries-and-birds tip from our rural French neighbours. Cut the bottom off a plastic bottle, attach some cord so the bottle can be suspended upside down in the tree, fairly high-up. Leave the lid off (which is now the bottom of the contraption) for drainage. 1/3-fill with moth-balls.

It's meant to keep the birds off, especially the middle-sized to large ones..........

Might be coincidence, but worth a try for those who can't net their trees?

if it is upside-down, how do the mothball stay in?

Freeze as pie filling or make Eton mess. Lots of it.

P.S. According to Martin Crawford, Vega is supposed to ripen at the end of July:

According to this (based on Martin's data):

https://cherries.orangepippin.com/cherries/yellow-spanish

Yellow Spanish is a late cherry with a sweet rich flavour. It's certainly not late here, nor does it have a sweet rich flavour, it's just OK.

So treat with caution all cultivar notes. This is why I've always wanted a wikified db of fruit varieties where users can have their own data added to the recorded data.

Agreed.
My Summer Sun is the least interesting of my cherries flavour-wise. Although it definitely does split.

The cut-off bottom becomes the "top" of the moth-ball-holder. The lid, taken off, lets any water drain out so you don't end up with moth-ball soup! This is pop-bottle-size necks, not milk-carton sized.

Looking at the books we appear to be around 4 weeks earlier on all our cherries

Fruit seems to be earlier, but not sweeter...could be a lack of sun at the right time isn't developing the sugars in the fruit?

My Morello is hardly colouring yet...but we're two weeks later than three miles down the valley, let alone how far behind you we are

Definitely need sun for sweetness and flavour, but we're getting a bit between the rain here

Considering its one of the first real fresh fruit of the season, its not bad.

But it does not compare to those varieties ripening now.

I think the only reason I had any is that they ripen so early, it fooled the blackbirds.
