I'd like to use my last tree space to have a variety with two types on it, my two favorites a braeburn and a bramley (assuming no-one knows where I can get a Jazz/Scifresh from)

Any ideas?

Bramley will be much more vigorous than Braeburn is my guess (although others may know better). PM OP, he may know where you can get hold of Jazz or similar

Do you have any other apples? If not, you may have pollination problems with the Bramley, its advised to have more than one other apple with it, as its a triploid variety.

Have you seen the Jenny trees at Deacons? https://shop.deaconsnurseryfruits.co.uk/apples-15-c.asp

I'm sure there'd be adequate pollination from other trees in a suburban location.

I've got a self fertilising apple tree so I'd hope I'm OK.

What's the difference between a Jenny and a General tree on that site?

It is impossible to get Jazz / Scifresh trees. I have resorted to planting pips.

I don't particularly like family trees, one of those things that sounds like a good idea but isn't. If part of the family is Bramley it will probably try to takeover, as Tahir says, it is extremely vigorous. Better to plant two separate dwarf trees. If you want a Bramley then have a look at Bramley 20, which is a sport which is 20% smaller than the regular Bramley - meaning it is the same size as everything else.

There is a tree height calculator for Bramley on our website which you might find interesting, the calculations were done by one of our contributors and take into account soil conditions etc, and you can compare with other varieties on different rootstocks etc.

https://www.orangepippin.com/apples/bramley (then click on the 'Tree heights' tab).

OP - are you trying to get lucky with a Jazz being pollinated by a Jazz to sell? All Jazz apples I get don't have pips in them

I couldn't see a Bramley 20 on your site I'm afraid - I've seen them elsewhere though.

None of my Jazz seedlings show any sign of producing anything but I may bud-graft some later this summer. Red Delicious seems to grow more readily from seed. I spoke to ENZA (owners of Scifresh) about this a few years ago. They said they would be happy to supply me with Jazz trees, but I would have to join their marketing club and the minimum quantity was 50K trees. I do like Jazz but wasn't sure I could eat that many.

will bud-grafting give you Jazz fruit? I assume not?

You would need access to a Jazz tree to obtain the bud material, and if you are not a licensed grower it would be illegal to do this.

So it's plant an acre of pips and hope one was fertilised by a Jazz

Unfortunately not. Apples do not grow true from seed so even if Jazz is the mother or father, it won't be a Jazz tree that grows from the seed. The only way you can be sure of having a Jazz tree is by asexual propagation, which is illegal unless you have a licence.
