Hello

I'm new to keeping chickens and am wondering if anybody here can help. Here is my first chicken which I hatched from eggs bought on eBay, only 1 of the 6 hatched and only 3 were fertile. Can anybody hazard a guess if it's a he or a she? Hatched almost 4 weeks ago now, I'm am curious when I will be able to tell?

Here is a pic;

looks girlish to me, but may be early days yet, keep looking under the chin as the red wattley bits appear much quicker in the males.

They have also been know to crow from 7 weeks old too....

Have you got him/her a friend?

Yes, she's sitting on him.

That is a mad looking hen.

We first hatched Appenzellers a few months ago, and ended up with 4 out of 4 being cockerels. We have just tried again (3 hatched this time) and ours are about 7 weeks old now. One is already crowing and is quite red around the gills (as it were). Out of the other two, one is also quite red and the third not so red, but the jury is still out on both of those. Yours looks like a hen to me so far, but I would wait a few more weeks to be doubly sure, as they do seem to start crowing very early indeed, and that is certainly the best test!

All the best

At the moment s/he has two quails for company, but I'm hoping soon to have another chicken for company. I was thinking it was a bit late in the year to hatch more from eggs? so was just going to keep an eye out in the paper for a young hen for company
