I'm currently knitting myself a jumper out of some wool I found tucked away. Trouble is I think it was meant for weaving as it is heavily oiled, and I am a bit bothered that it will felt/fall apart when I wash it. Will probably end up as a lightly oiled and hope for the best jumper for very cold weather in the woods.

That is lovely, ninat !
Decisions, decisions about the collar/neck ruffle - I can see it would look good either way.

I find collars / necklines / neckbands really difficult on knitting. They never turn out quite right for me.

Might have been meant for machine knitting if it was oiled ? Was it on a cone ?

I am having a phase of 'annoyed with my knitting', as I have a cardi on the go that I started over a year ago, and will probably take a few more years to finish - have done the back and 1/3rd of a front - and I should be knitting a pair of turquoise bootsocks in DK this month, but can't decide which pattern, have no inspiration, and the design attempts I've done do not please me.

Bah !

On the other hand, I did knit these last month

That really is lovely Wish I was working on something as exciting.
I've just finished the prototype for a new spiked wristlet (but all soft really), and am having to redo a hat that I thought I'd finished becasue it shrunk a bit too much in the wash for the projected owner

I've not found the tea cosy as hard as I thought it was going to be. It's a no sew one, working on a round needle and it's actually looking a little like a tea cosy.

That jacket is beautiful ninat. Very delicate.
Just wondering if there is anyone out there who has a pattern for very simple Welly socks!
I find using 4 needles a bit 'iffy', so the pattern really has to be for a novice

Four needles needn't be iffy.
Once you get the hang of it it's very simple really, with the bonus that you don't need to sew it up afterwards. Give it a try, you'll be amazed how easy it is - and just think how impressed your friends & family will be to see you knitting with a hedgehog.

If you find it difficult to join up the cast on edge without twisting it or dropping half the stitches, you could knit a few rows flat so that you can see what you are doing, then join it into a tube and just sew up the tiny seam later. No one looks that closely at welly socks, so your secret will be safe with us (and who knows how many million google users )

Sally in Wales did a great basic sock pattern on here - hopefully one of the link fairies will be along shortly to provide a link.

Here is the pattern Gai. Size eights are 5mm needles.

Approx. 350 yards of worsted weight yarn
size 8 US needles and a cable needle or one double pointed needle
(Feel free to use chubbier yarn and/or larger needles to make a giant scarf. It will look just as lovely!)
Finished size, approx. 5 ½” x 55”
Cast on 42 stitches.
Row 1. (WS) K2, P2, K2, P6, K2, P2, K2, P6, K2, P2, K2, P6, K2, P2, K2
Row 2. (RS) K4, P2, K6, P2, K2, P2, K6, P2, K2, P2, K6, P2, K4
Row 3. (WS) repeat row 1
Row 4. (RS) repeat row 2
Row 5. (WS) repeat row 1.
Row 6. (RS) repeat row 2.
Row 7. (WS) repeat row 1.
Row 8. (RS) K4, P2, C6F, P2, K2, P2, C6F, P2, K2, P2, C6F, P2, K4
Repeat these rows to desired length, ending on row 7. Bind off.
Key:
C6F = Slip 3 sts. onto a cable needle and hold to front of work. K3, then K the 3 sts. off cable needle.

Sally's Article on how to knit a Quick and Chunky sock

Agree with Midland Spinner's suggestion of knitting a couple of rows flat using 2 needles, before portioning out onto DPNs and joining to knit in the round.

Edited for clarity.
