today our neighbours have been round with bag full of lovely walnuts. the question of how do they shell them without breaking them is the freshness it would appear! they just twist apart! yum!
my question is what is the best way to store them? i have used them in my baking today but have loads more!
any ideas?

Are you taking them from their green hulls but leaving them in the shell, or taking that bit off too? My inclination is to remove the hulls and then let the nut mature inside the shell by placing them in a single layer on racks in a cool but well ventilated place. The nuts will still contain some moisture you see, so they need to be somewhere where they can dry & mature but not get mouldy.

Mind you, I only ever have a small amount to deal with so others who have their own trees may have better advice!

Just eat them. A fresh ripe walnut is one of the finest foods known to man. Dried walnuts are a pallid and pointless imitation. IMHO.

hi i've got my 1st lot of fresh walnuts foraged.

de-husked them wearing gloves.

mine are laid out in plastic mushroom trays

they taste fantastic eat as many as you can while fresh
as a vegetarian i eat nuts every day for protein ration myself to 3 a day. plus 2 hazel nuts out of the garden.

great for stir fries when dried or cakes or yummy pear and walnut chutney

Open them by twisting a table knife in the stalk end.
