Hello lovelies,

So I've be offered Dogwalker's moral support as I take my first tentative knitting steps - now I need to decide what to knit.

I'm really into the idea of knitting something for myself (bad mother that I am), but really don't need anymore gloves or hats or scarves.
I've settled on the idea of a gilet - I wonder if anyone out there more au fait with where to find these things might have come across a fairly basic pattern.

This is really my style but I think it could be made from much nicer yarn, something with a bit of character and depth to it. I appreciate that it would far to complicated for me, so was thinking of something a similar shape and as chunky but in a simpler knit. Any ideas?

TIA Clara

Whislt I know one lady who chose cables for her first ever knitted object, I agree that for a first go choose something with a very unfussy stitch pattern.

Have you done any knitting at all yet? Just wondering if you know what stithes you are comfortable with

How about this one, looks simple at first glance but has a bit of interest in the panels so you won't be bored senseless

you're 50% of the way there then Most patterns are just knit and purl, with the ocasional increase or decrease for good measure. If you are comfortable doing plain knitting then you shoud be fine with a pattern like the waistcoat once you've had a bit of a practice doing purl and alternating the two
