I've just arrived at Ma's to shut the hens up. As I drove in the gates, a pekin hen pelted around the corner at the top of the drive followed by her friends. And a HUGE dog-fox trotted, bold as brass, across the front of the house and in to the 'top shed'. The dogs are confused and slightly apologetic

Sounds like it's time to force several mugs of tea down Arvo and leave him out there until "dealt with". I'm sure Leo would willingly join in

Arvo is working away this week - perfectly timed with the move, Nenna's hospital appointments, etc Leo's on the case, though. I have to be extra careful shutting the hens up, apparently

Is there a live trap or any type of traps available? Even on loan from someone. I have one over here I would let you borrow if you were not so far away. Of course I like to shoot things too.

I am considering investing in one of these from Mole Valley. It's eye-wateringly expensive, but I can get a mate to come and shoot it for me if I catch it. And if I think about it in terms of Universal Units Of Chicken, that's six POL Barnevelders - and I lost sixteen this spring and summer.

want me bring some dogs down lol we had a good sized dog and vixon last night chattering outside my gate was sooo close on taking the JRT out at 0300 but it shut up and moved on down the road. will be going out later if it turns up tonight.. also im off to mole valley on 26th if you want me pick up a trap for you.

Thanks, Matty - I won't know whether I can afford it for another few weeks, until we find out whether they are going to try to keep the deposit on the old place. And is it wrong to confess that I quite like a trip to MV myself?

Buy two & hire one out.
A guy I know charges £25.00 a fox.

thats a good idea does he get many take him up on offer? mount of foxes about here would pay for trap in 6 foxes. i was told to go see a butcher up the road he would lend me a trap but i think i may invest in one next year

Round here it costs upwards of £75 per fox for hire of trap and service of man with gun.

We have an expensive trap here but the damn thing won't go in it! I think there's nothing left for it but to get a gun.

In BBs original post he recommended tinned cat food.

It likes ducks - got another one last night!!!! - so we've baited with dead ones, and live ones, and live chickens (it has a live bait box attached) I think the issue is that the mechanism is so sensitive and it 'sits' on the outside, so when the fox sniffs around the bait it triggers the mechanism we mostly just catch cats!
