A few years ago I picked up a little pot of bay tree seedlings being sold as a small plant. These used to be quite common and they were easily split up to make about 10 plants for only a few pence each.

I'd like to get a few more as I'd like to raise loads more bay trees as they're so useful. Does anyone know where I can get some fairly cheaply? I'll trawl round the local nurseries when I get round to it but if I don't have any luck it would be good to know where else I can get them.

And if anyone fancies raising loads of very useful evergreen plants cheaply I can recommend giving it a go.

probably the most obvious thing to do is take cuttings from your existing bay trees. having said that.. we have one bay - its enormous - are you sure you want lots? I cut it for greenery at thingymas, i make wreathes out of it, and the resulting dried bay is more than i could ever use in the kitchen per year, as well as the fresh leaves too.

I've never had much success with bay tree cuttings although I know other people have. With the seedlings I'll also get several months head start. Yes I'd like quite a lot, I'd like a few planted in our woodland to grow into full sized trees and others I'd like to use as hedging, they look better than things like privet and seem to be quite easy to grow and look after.

Found some at a large localish nursery. £3.99 for a pot of a dozen 8 inch seedlings. Probably new season stock so worth looking out for if you fancy and nice, useful, evergreen hedge.

I saw a woman by two bay trees at £70 each the other day! I almost died. £140 for two fairly boring looking trees, what's wrong with people, how can they waste so much money?
