I'm making a new area of the garden, opposite the patio doors. There's already 3 acers in there (thanks B&q sale) and we want to plant some lilly of the valley between them but I want something to go in between, heightwise. I'd prefer perennial but don't mind annual, and I'm not fussed as to whether it's soft or hard, but something that's about 1-2 feet high with good ground cover.

Winter Box makes great ground cover, pretty much looks after itself and you get tiny (almost invisible) white scented flowers at this time of year. It's spread happily itself or you can keep it trimmed. https://www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/plants/plant_finder/plant_pages/11217.shtml Lovely stuff. EV

Crocosmia? Needs very little maintianing, grows well in a variety of soils, is a good green filler most of the season and gives a fair few flowers and comes in a variety of colours - reds, oranges and yellows. And is attractive.

I have Hellebores under some of my acer trees. They flower before the tree comes into leaf & seem to cope with the summer shade very well.

That would be my choice, with some choice heuchera & tiarella.
I would also put autumn flowering bulbs in as well as spring.
