When scouring fleece, how do you know when it's de-greased enough?

depends what you want to do with it!
I personally prefer to spin with a bit of grease left in, so I scour fairly lightly, but if I was going to dye first I'd want to be sure all teh grease is out. In that case, I'd test a bit

Thanks, I think I'll just rinse it thoroughly and see what it's like when it dries.
I want to have a go at combing, then spin with it, hopefully.
It's no use for dying, it's dark brown!

You might be surprised how beautiful dyed colored wool is! Even dark brown.

If I find that my scoured fleece is too dry, I'll soak it in hair conditioner and warm water for 20-30 minutes.

I like putting electric blue over dark coloured fleece - looks stunning

Coo! Our local WSD guild is concentrating on dyeing this year, we've even got Jenny Dean coming to give a talk. I might practice on the dark stuff first!

This Christmas stocking was knit from hand spun single ply from medium brown roving that was dyed emerald green and a red.

I didn't set the twist in the yarn before knitting, so stitches are a bit skewed.[/img]

That's fun.

This is much darker, faded black really, but it will still be interesting to give it a 'colour rinse'.

Incidentally this fleece, despite being hebridean like the one I tried before doesn't have that coarse, horribly hairy tog (or is it thel? ).
I can't 'unfelt' it by pulling out the tog. Oh well, if I can't get it into a spinnable state, I'll just pull it to fluffy bits and make a mattress with it!
I do wish I'd tried this one first though. The tog is very long and soft on this one, and I could definitely see it being used for worsted.
