I bought a string of garlic but when we got home we noticed most had started to sprout, I now have about 60 garlic cloves sitting on top of compost in 2 trays to get the roots started properly and they are coming along a treat, we want to grow them in tubs / window boxes and in between the chilli plants to help keep aphids down, how many garlic can you grow in a window box ? how far apart and how deep should the compost be ?

That aside, I'd plant them about 20cm apart each direction and allow at least 30cm of root depth for big bulbs-closer together for smaller bulbs.

they are all on the window sills at the mo, sitting on top of the compost to make the roots come out better
