Every time my computer installs an update it stops being able to contact our wireless printer. And it has never managed to get its head around the idea that this printer is also a scanner - if I want to use that function I have to boot up OH's laptop

Every so often the computer stops being able to print - It can see it, but stoutly maintains that the printer is offline.

The only way I've found to deal with this is to go to the printer & devices window and 'remove the device'. Then 'install new printer'. I do it so often that I've copied the drivers onto my documents so that I don't have to have to disc permanently in my dvd drive.

I did once find a way to stop it 'helpfully' updating the driver - which worked until Windows updated itself and reset the settings

Now I can't remember how I told it not to update the driver every time.

Can anyone suggest a way to permanently install the driver in a way that means that I can print without having to remove & install the printer Every Time.

I've got Windows 7 and an HP Deskjet F4580 printer/scanner.

Had same problem with wireless connection Ive got an HP4700 scanner printer copier, I just use the cable instead. It used to connect to the guy next doors printer at work.

printers...all of them....are the work of the devil (if I believed in such a thing ) They never work properly as wireless and connected aint much better....I am onto my third wireless printer and its..carp! HP were recommended to me....I knew they would be carp too!!

they are all pretty hopeless, every printer Ive had, probably about 6 in total have all been toublesome although this one is slightly better the HP4700 but its started to chew the paper arrrgh scan and copy quality is really good.

I'm happy with my HP printer except for the fact that although its a wireless printer, I cant get it to work wirelessly... Thats probably more my fault than the printer's though!

I can't seem to make that work.

I can't have it connected - it;s too far from the printer

My HP decided to stop talking to my laptop the other week and refused point blank to re-install, either drivers or printer.

I ended up going into the registry to delete all files/drives/mentions of the printer/drivers (very scary moment), as this was supposed to let me re-install. It didn't.

A few days later, I tried again, this time, without the printer attached to the laptop ... I just did an "Add new printer" and went through the wizard. All back to normal.

vegplot thinks it was related to updates here too.

We had a lexmark on all our computers and my brother bought us a new wireless printer Christmas 2010, we can't install it cos lexmark has stolen the print spooler and won't recognise the new printer drivers or anything about it, tried everything we can to strip out the lexmark but nothing works.

Have you removed it from the registry?
Deleting it from Control Panel/printers isn't enough.

Yep, uninstall won't do it (daft really!).
I don't blame you at all about not wanting to fiddle with critical registry stuff.

I wouldn't have messed with it had vegplot not been a few feet away.

I have seen this problem and neither printer or computer was to blame it's your wireless router and it's dhcp leasing what happens is the printer loses the address that the router gave it as the lease time's out then the computer can no longer find it. the solution is to give the printer a permanent address outside of the dhcp scope and then re-install it on the computer. Having a fixed address also (usually) resolves the scanner issue.
