Rosie - did you post mortem the eggs?

I took them to a far corner of the garden and tapped them with a very long stick. Each exploded in a mass of grey liquid sludge

I would guess them to be fertile then - blank eggs are usually ok even after a long incubation (though i dont know how much longer you let her sit?) whereas eggs that started then stopped are usually the manky ones
in my limited experience.

Did the dogs turn up about .00002 seconds later and try to eat/roll in it?

Interesting CiG - I would say she sat for 40 days although it was difficult to say exactly when she started to sit properly, and that in itself may have been the problem.

That person holding the ruler isn't even wearing gloves

This is probably an appropriate point to quote Judith: "Duck sex is not nice".

I did. I sort of wish I hadn't, to be honest. I feel a bit soiled.

Having just looked over Chez's shouder and seen her cue-ing up:

... well follow the link ...

Me: 'Is that in the naughty corner?'
Chez: 'No the poultry corner.'

it is really hard to judge when they start sitting isn't it - cos they seem to start spending the night on the eggs, and come off in the day - which i am sure sure addle them - except last year that's exactly what my duck did and then she hatched 14

If I ever sell muscovey eggs to hatch I EXPLain about them getting a better hatch with a cooling period in the day and aspray with lukewarm water etc---the ducks do it so much better though.

Both my girls are now laying so fingers crossed I'll get two successful hatches this time. I've not seem Harold mating with either of them but one is very mucky on her back and the other less clean than normal
