One of our pekin hens suddenly started killing her chicks as they were hatching. She killed one while it was still half in the egg and another at some time overnight. The others we have saved and are doing well. Another of our pekins has raised her second cluch with no problems. Never had this happen before, is this common or is she just a bad mom?

When we had dorkings, one of the the girls used to do the same thing. Her sister, however, was a brilliant mother.

I thought that of a two week old kitten that the mother had singled out to abandon (repeatedly, she kept leaving him in her litter tray) but we hand reared him and he's fine

They do sometimes do it; I've had it happen a couple of times. Bad luck

Two of our chicks were attacked too. One now sports a little scar on the side of its head, but the other didn't survive its injuries.

Others were completely ignored by the broodies they hatched under, so some are fostered by other broodies and we have 3 in a brooder indoors.
