I planted out my baby sweetcorn plants a couple of weekends ago, and something is eating the leaves. I would suspect slugs, but the holes are very long and thin, along the leaves, and don't look like normal slug damage. It's basically turning them a bit lacey. Anyone know what this could be?

Join the club. Broad beans mullered. Three courgette plants mullered. How long can you live off jerusalem artichokes?

Sounds like bird damage to me - black bird or pigeon maybe. Brids tend to shred things rather than nibble.

Ah, that sounds feasible. We have lots of pigeons. How on earth do you net sweetcorn though?!

I go for slugs. If you look at sweetcorn leaves, because sweetcorn is a grass the leaf ribs run along form base to tip. The rib is harde material which slugs tned to leave until last, giving the effect you seem to be describing. Any signs of slug trails?

I bought some really nice heirloom corn, but have left it this year, not good weather at all for corn.

I have seen magpies trash a sweetcorn plant by grabbing an outer leaf of a cob then peeling them away, one by one.

Too clever those birds.
