A quick question:

we have 4 chickens at school for which I am partly resposible. We also have a veg garden ( ditto)

The children want to feed the old and stringy runner beans to the chickens - is it safe for them to eat the bean/seads ? I did wonder if they could be poisonous as with uncooked kidney beans and humans???

thank you

ps have not been around a lot recently - must catch up with what's been going on!

I have no idea...but my 'gut feeling' says , no. If you think of all wildbird mixes..there is split peas and lentils included..but never beans.

Fresh bean seeds don't need lot of cooking..so for occasional treat, if they would be boiled 5 mins..just to soften them slightly, I'm sure it don't hurt.

My chooks won't touch runner beans, esp tough old ones - unless they're cooked as leftovers! Even the pigs aren't overly impressed, although they eat them if they're on the vines when I pull them down.

Thanks for the answers - I'll try cooking some up and see how they go.

'tis a minefield and a steep learning curve having chickens in school - but so worth it, especially with some of the more "challenging" children
