I don't have red mite in the henhouse yet, the hens have only lived there for a week, but I am researching red mite killer, just in case, so I have some in , and to use as a deterrent. Has anybody got a success rate with the various powders/sprays available. It's a minefield out there trying to get the right thing!

My PP magazing this month has done a report on a new product, but it;s only available in large quantity at the moment, at a cost of £80!

from my experience red mite comes back regardless of what you use all you can do is clean and treat on a regular basis.
I use jeyes fluid and a jet wash which normally clears it for a month or two.

AT the start of the season in the house while the hens are sut out of it for an hour or two and vaseline the perches at either end.

I never have red mite.

That's interesting, it says it's pesticide free and immobilises fleas...does it make the hen house sticky?

You've no soul. I was assuming that each squirt contained thousands of tiny nanobots armed with little flea and tick clamps.

No, not at all. I do it (well I did when I had hens, will have more soon fingers crossed) two or three times a summer, depending on the heat. No residue at all really.

I tried all of those before, then out of desparation, I tried this stuff as I had it for the dog. Just clean the house out, spray well everywhere, shut all doors and windows and leave for an hour or two. I usually do it in the afternoon, when they're all out and about. Put in new bedding, grease the perches, and open the house up.

Although with the new hens, I'll be doing a Nat

Try mixing jeyes with water and diatom, then paint it into all the nooks and crannies. It dries onto the wood. I have found this to be an extremely useful deterrent;) It has stayed on a whole year!

This year has been a particularly bad one for RSM, when you spot the little blighters you have to move fast, get a diatom powder and a large soft paintbrush. Drown the area with powder regularly and you should kill them off.
An untreated house can soon be completely infested. The only sure way to bring things under control is to house your stock elsewhere for a couple of days and use a creosote based liquid to thoroughly clean the house. You'll see tiny white juveniles scattering, these are the mites that the powders and sprays don't get to, they then emerge and feed on your hens and the whole sorry scenario starts again.
Most importantly, let the house completely air before you allow the hens back in.

You maybe assuming that the RM are inside the house, but thats not always the case, on occasion I've had those white juveniles that Garden Hens is referring to, appear on the exterior of the chickenshed when I've been creosoting the outside of the house.

I had a major infestation recently. I favour the take no prisoners approach to treating them.

A smoke bomb https://www.pestcontroldirect.co.uk/acatalog/Agropharm_Fortefog_P_MAXI_Smoke_Generator.html removes most of them from the shed very quickly and easily while the ivomec (harkers) clears them from the birds. I also used a residual pyrethroid insecticidal spray a week later just to be sure.

I know this is counter to what most people advocate because it uses chemicals but I have to say it does work.

This is the hub of the dreadful matter. The diatom powders are brilliant and get rid of visible mites, good for powdering directly onto the hens, but there are all those little hatchlings tucked away, far too deep for powder or mite sprays to penetrate.
