use a circular needle for a 'heavy' knit as the weight can sit in your lap, rather than on the needles. You just turn at the end of a row and knit back the other way. It makes sense when you do it. The other benefit is you never loose a needle I now use my circulars all the time, and my poor straights, are almost redundant.

I don't actually like my Branching Out scarf - it may be the colour, and the yarn I used. I've never worn it yet, and probably never will.

SSK, slip, slip, knit is a left slanting decrease, whereas K2tog gives a right slant ... I think.

SSK is one stitch I found really hard to get. I used to use [s1k1psso] instead, which is also left-leaning = slip one knitwise, knit one, pass the slipped stitch over the knit one. Now I've got the hang of ssk, there is no stopping me !

Is it the Livy wrap or the Livy scarf you're knitting ? (the linky takes me to the overall book contents).
Both of them are lovely, but I can see why you might be having difficulty as a lace newbie.
I think I would need stitch markers, lifelines and a pen to tick off what I'd done. (OK, I'm not as experienced with lace knitting as sally, mochyn or toggle, but I'm not a total beginner).

The yarn sounds lovely. What colour(s) is yours ?

Gil it's the one colour wrap. Mines shocking pink, red and purple. I spotted it in the shop and 'had' to have it. I came home and decided to use a proper pattern for it, so got the book on the internet. Trust me to pick something tricky! Kate

SSK & s1k1psso are the same when finished, you just arrive by slightly different routes - I use them interchangeably. With ssk you slip both sts to get them sitting the other way round on the needles, then knit into both at the same time (which gives you the left leaning decrease), whereas with s1k1psso you have to pass the slipped stitch over after so it's a tiny bit slower to do (but not by much)

Lifelines: a good tip I read somewhere is that if you use the knitpro interchangeable circulars (the sort with a tiny hole in the metal at the ends to tighten them up), you can put a bit of dental floss through the hole & tie it in place then it automatically threads the floss through every stitch of the round, so you can add the lifeline as you knit & just cut the floss at the end of the round & tie it off - how neat is that!

I find that my ssk is much neater than my s1k1psso. Which makes ssk good for me to use in a lace pattern. Howevere, for sock gussets or toes, when I sometimes forget when I last decreased, I prefer my messier s1k1psso, because I can see the last decrease because the slipped over stitch is visibly puffy.
