As far as I can see looking at the summary on IMDB the first one covers the whole book pretty much. The next two are 'based on characters from Tolkien'.

It is, I just don't know how they are going to do it. I mean at least Lord of the rings was three books. The Hobbit is only a teeny tiny book.

apparently they are adding lots of stuff that isn't even in the book.. hmm! But I still think it'll make a good film... hopefully.

I listening to the 6 hour abridged audio book in one session not long ago! It will be some time before I see the film though, as it will be a while before I can buy the DVD on Amazon for 1p.

Went to see it tonight, loved it, padded out the fight/battle scenes, improbable escapes and added some nods towards the LOTR that weren't explicit in the book, otherwise looked right, well paced and enjoyable. Gollum again a scene stealer. Took Little Behemoth (9) and she loved it, 'really scary good' was her summation..

So glad to read this (we hope to go next week) as last night's Film 2012 pretty much slated it. Well, one of the reviewers did the other didn't seem to have an opinion either way. The main criticism seemed be the length of it - all the padding to stretch it out (I think they said an hour in and the party was still in Bilbo's kitchen! ) They also thought the effects / style looked cheap

It's not a 'great' film just enjoyable. There's a bit of scene setting history history at the beginning that isn't in the book but explains more of what they are doing. There's an unnecessary song, but that's Tolkein to the spirit, and the party is long but there's 13 characters to introduce. The battles and chases are stretched and some shade into Raiders of the lost arc. Characters referred to in passing are beefed up to give more context/narrative so they actually make an appearance and tell the bigger story. Basically very little is cut out of the story and more is added from Tolkein's histories to make sense of references, history and what is to come. I've heard stuff about how it looks but I just watched it in boring old 2D in one of the oldest working cinemas in the UK so it look fine to me, there was an interval and a lady selling choc-ices from a tray at the front.

I went to see it too.... it was enjoyable. There were some really lovely bits... but it was LONG. it was like watching the unedited version. As if Peter J didn't hire an editor or a CGI expert. Filming in this format did not work at all. The graphics looked cheap and nasty, as if watching plasticine monsters.

unfortunately it is a cash cow, it was obvious he didn't really have anything decent to add, so just stretched out random bits. (1 hour of hobbits choosing which cheese to eat?!?)

It is like this film could have been made before lotr. But it wasn't bad either. Should have been one film though. (some funny moments as well, which made it better).

To be honest I'm glad it was long and we can criticise it for that. Too many films are chopped to incomprehension in the cutting room cos there's a belief people can't cope.

We went last night, with some trepidation based on my history with LOTR, and thoroughly enjoyed it! Yes, you could trim out 30 mins without ant loss, but it flowed better than I anticipated.
We watched it in 3D, having (reluctantly) sold 3D tV and Blu-ray since their launch I wanted to see something in 3D before seeing it in 2D, I've never been impressed with 3D on a small screen and now I can honestly say I'm slightly less unimpressed with big screen 3D. It may well be me that is over critical, but 3D still cannot do fast motion smoothly and (ironically) gives a "processed" effect to CGI in particular, but that's not the fault of the film or the director, the technology just isn't right yet.
Back to the film, go see it, it is very good, just like the book, it seems "lighter" and more enjoyable than LOTR.

Can't wait to see it. Been stuck in hospital since tuesday and it's the first thing I'm going to do when I get out.

I saw it last night and thought it was great! I don't think they dragged it on too much either.

Well I thoroughly enjoyed it, as did my two twelve year old companions. It wasn't 3D, but I thought the special effects were good (I had to shut my eyes for some bits) and the characters gelled well together. I didn't think anyof it was superfluous either.
