While most people wouldn't bat an eyelid if they saw opium poppies in a garden, hemp tends to draw suspicious neighbours out of the woodwork! oops! I quite fancy growing some for poultry bedding actually.

Yes, you do need a license to grow it.

When I did some investigation the price of the license seemed to be prohibitive on a small scale, I think it was around £400. There may be an old thread about it.

Hemp's amazing. I think Henry ford built a car from hemp which ran on hemp oil fuel. Hemp produces four times the amount of oxygen that trees do,. I think you need a licence to grow it, must not be on a roadside, and i think you must have someone to buy it from you when harvested. I think i write "i think" too much!

The down side is it has a low smoke point, so it is no good for frying.

Yes you can grow industrial hemp (with a THC content of 0.2% or
lower). But you need a license which costs £580 per year for cultivation and possession.

THC is tetrahydrocannabinol or in other words the active narcotic ingredient.

If you want to cultivate and possess hemp which is above 0.2% THC then the license fee is £4700 per year.

All hemp must be grown in locations away from schools, public rights of way or vehicular access.

Hmph. Maybe I'll grow it in Spain instead.

Since it sells at £180/ounce, that sounds like a bargain.

eh ? I have a bottle of hemp oil in the kitchen that I bought from Sainsburys. It shallow fries / sautes perfectly well. Maybe I wouldn't deep fry chips with it.

That is the principal source of used cooking oil, which is my preferred feedstock for fuel.

flax ,good enough for lino etc oil per acre is location dependant until the king needs some clothes hemp is a problematic crop

Hemp seeds are quite a good health food, apparently they contain basically everything.

There's a commercial grower in Devon, "Good Hemp protein" that makes all sorts from it. They make protein powder, sell the seeds (they will have been treated to stop them germinating

) and some body building stuff.
I bought some the other day from Holland and Barrett out of curiosity (I'd read about the health claims). It is hard stuff to drink (very bad taste, have to down it in one) but doesn't sit on your stomach and made me feel pretty good.

It is supposed to have 20 Amino acids and be rich in fibre, Omega 3 and protein. So if anything it might be a good idea to encourage its use as a supplement to improve the population's diet (obviously not as an alternative for eating properly though).

Since it's only the seeds that are used for eating then the rest of it can go to make paper, plasterboard and biofuel.
And to stop people growing cannabis in it would just require male plants to be interspersed in it since the female plants are usually used for cannabis and the drug level plummets once they are fertilized.
