Your closest branch is Carterton. There's also the Blue Cross at burford.

Puzzled as to why folks come up with complex solutions in the name of being "humane" None of these rosy ideas are anywhere near humane for the animal dying. All the really do is make things less unpleasant for the person doing them.

Hard truth is if your going to take a life then man up about it and take real responsibility for the act. Put all your own feelings aside as they do not matter.

For something small as a kitten simply crushing the skull and brain as fast as possible will be one of the most suffer free deaths. Either between a size 12 boot and a concrete slab, or make up a good quality priest for striking the base of the skull. Both ways will be brutal possibly messy and traumatic for the person involved, but most importantly kindest to the animal dying.

Gassing, drowning, and all many of other silly notions are what happens when folks become too detached from life and death and pamper to their own feelings rather than reality.

There is however a difference between what I would consider in my own circumstances and experiences, and what I would suggest on a public forum that will be visible for all eternity.

well done for asking about a potential problem ,chloroform is horrid stuff but it would work if used correctly ,dont is my advice

as to painless for the kitten i would think head shot from from forehead down towards the spine at close range would work ,might be messy with a shotgun (other weapons may be more suitable )but it avoids the bagged and taken on the " we're off to see the death vet " car ride .

vet option for spaying sounds good as big puss wont miss the kits ,

best of all nice homes for kits and spaying for mum

having had the "ohh it is expecting " moment with a rescue cat i "acquired" i feel your pain ,i found homes pre spaying for mine

i dont have cats now

I think you also have to be very careful about it becoming known you have opted for such a method. I can recall someone being done for diy whacking kittens on the head a few years ago.

Iirc it is illegal to kill a cat except in an emergency if you're not a vet.

ETA - I was wrong, that's just what the cats protection woman said to my uncle, it only applies if it isn't your cat

Well I'm absolutely not man enough to stamp on any thing's head so that's definitely not an option. The idea behind the chloroform option as far as I understand it, was that the animal breathes it in, becomes unconscious and death follows shortly afterwards. Sounded pretty humane to me.

I will speak to the vet next week but am thinking that spaying now might be the best way forward. I'm always a bit unsure about kittens, lovely though they are, there are loads of adult cats that need rehoming and I wonder if available kittens mean adult cats take longer to be rehomed....

Gas them with CO2 & argon mix. Typically a welding gas mix. They will simply go to sleep.

Kill them yourself and you might find yourself in a lot of trouble. You don't know what you're doing, so you could unwittingly cause pain and/or distress - go to the vet. He/she may well be willing to spay her as she is, particularly if you're going to have them pts anyway.

However, the CPL tend to rehome kittens relatively easily - more easily than adult cats, at least. Contact your local branch and see what they say.

Those of you who may have benefited from management training may recall the "lateral thinking" session, where students are invited to "brainstorm", as in "List 50 ways to kill a cat".

Dear Leddi, your first post is way off - no lateral thinking there! Suggesting going to someone who is properly qualified, suitably equipped, well experienced and able to offer a sensible alternative is just so passe.

Now now, don't tease the new kid in class We might scare them away and that would be a shame.

Mind you, after my recent viewing habits I can't help thinking about kitten poker. Sorry.

I think Shadiya is probably the person that has been chased off.
