Versus tablets, any experience anyone?

I quite fancy one - as an ereader and for web access, mostly. They seem very reasonably priced and family are going to have whip-round for my upcoming birthday. But are they reasonably priced because they are pants?

I want an android one.

Seems to be that all the cheap tablets lack Gorilla glass and hence are a lot more vulnerable to damage, and I have yet to hear anyone really say the performance is great
It's a shame really as I think the market it ripe for generic Android tablets that do tick all the boxes.

Oh. Wrong answer, I wanted you to help justify a potential purchase.

Thank you, Jema.

Cathryn - never say never. If I get one, the children are going nowhere near it and I will get all sorts of *protective stuff* for it

Let me know what you get. It sounds like the kind of thing I would use and I imagine that Jema's idea of performance is quite a bit different to mine.

I got my son a Sumvision Cyclone Voyager as they were a good spec and reasonably priced, and I am very impressed with it. It is not as good as the Nexus 7, but it is a lot cheaper. I would recommend it.

Just going off a cheap one we got for our youngest for Christmas, I'd say you really do get what you pay for.

Chez, would you not be able to save a few more pennies and maybe get the entry level Kindle? £129 they are.

What do you want it for? D you just 'need' a tablet?

Would an iPad be better, given Nenna is getting one, and you could FaceTime with her? Unsure if cheap ones offer anything similar?

The cheapest iPad is £279 for a mini. I really have no need of a tablet in a practical sense, but I would *like* one. I could just about swallow the price of a Kindle Fire - but I don't want to be tied in to Kindle sofware to manage my e-library; and I am not sure if it will run anything else?

I know you can install the Aldiko ebook app on the Kindle Fire.

I suggest you get, broadly, what you pay for, and as you're doing it for desire, rather than necessity, you'll always want the next one up, and remain disappointed. Where that leads you, I don't know, however.

Divorce, probably .

I want to be *organised*. I want to have my ebooks in one place and be free of the kindle up-and-down thing. Apparently there is a Calibre app for android, so I can keep my library on here - the laptop - and then use the tablet as an ereader via the app. And I can also use it for looking at the web, which is what I am doing most of atm - lots of reading.

Anyway. Cheap seemed good and self-indulgent as well as Lutheran.

Just having a look at second hand tablets on ebay atm.

Nook HD?

Possibility of deals in the near future - they've just been selling off the Nook simple touch for £29. Rumours that they're pulling out of hardware.

Nook HD runs android, easily rootable, kindle app installable if you like that sort of thing and pretty universally accepted to have the best tablet screen going. The HD is 7" and the HD+ is 10"
