We have been here before, but I never got it sorted.

Today, I have lots of single strand electric tape, two energisers, two solar panels, a battery, sun and a field I need to divide.

The panels have a red and black lead.
The chargers have a live to fence, an earth, and a red and black lead.
The battery has a + and - terminal.

I have no idea how to lash these together to make the fence work.

Can someone please draw me a very, very simple picture?

The solar panels have a diode in them, if that helps.

I am happy to use one or two energisers/panels.

Is it as simple as red wire from the panel and the energiser to the battery +ve, and the same with the black wires?

Join it all together and let us know what happens.

I can't help I used to stand and look at mine each year trying to remember what bit joined what. I can look for the tester I have and send it for when you have got it working. Or you can use a child or handy friend.

Nick,

Yes, red to red (+), black to black(-). You will need to earth it though.
Best is a 4ft copper/iron rod bashed into the ground near the charger with 6ins to spare and connected to the earth and black wires.

Don't know what kind of charger you've got but here's a page with some instructions. The earthing bit is 3/4 down the page.

Good luck (may the sun shine on your panels!)

Whilst most battery / inverter installs do need the battery negative connecting to earth (and ones installed in metal boxes like boats) you dont normally earth the battery negative for fence energisers as the high voltage output is isolated from the input.

You do however need the earth rod for the fence return lead as mentioned in your link.

Edit to add.

No one ever does it but really you should fit a fuse in one of the battery leads as close to the battery as is possible. To be completely correct you should also fuse the output of the solar panel as it too is a source of energy.

OK.

500m of wire run out on plastic posts, two solar panels, one battery, and one energiser later, eleven inquisitive noses have been shocked and they're currently in the right place. No, I doubt they'll stay there long, either, but for now, it's up and running.

It actually worked fine for several hours with no battery, as the sun was shining, and I thought I'd better give the battery a charge to give us a head start.

Thanks for the advice.

Cows have remained contained overnight.

Farming? Piece of piss.
