Hello - anyone done much of this? I'm using good old-fashioned school glue + water mix to add cut out pictures to a cardboard box. Will the same do over the top for finishing, do you think? Running out of dosh so not keen on splashing out on craft varnish...

Most 'school' glues these days are water soluble. It won't be the best finish, but as long as you keep it really dry, and don't expect anything marvellous, it might work. If it gets wet it will get sticky though, so don't let it get wet.

Thanks - it's for a jewellery box, so should keep dry. Got to pop into town for some velveteen to finish it off, though, so will keep an eye out for some cheap craft supplies that might do a better job.

I lined the inside of our seed box with old seed packets and magazine bits. I used white PVA and also finished it off with a layer of PVA - it worked fine and dried very clear.

You can view it here if interested: https://ianandluis.blogspot.com.es/2011/11/seed-sorting-saving-and-storing.html

Looks good Wentworth. PVA, which is poly vinyl alcohol or acetate is quite a nice glue, but as I said, if it gets wet, possibly even damp, it might get a bit tacky. Should be all right for both your projects as you would want them to stay dry anyway.
