Some of my students are pushing me to buy a tablet. I happen to say in class one day that I fancied having a portable type computer thingy, but didn't want a full blown laptop. They've been blinding me with science ever since bless 'em...

Apparently you can get them with a sort of thin rubber keyboard which also acts as a cover (I don't like touch screen things much).

Any suggestions anyone? (Chez and Jo in particular please - you always speak in lingo I can understand and *get* me)

I was reluctant when my OH offered me his old iPad, but now I love it. They are touch screen but you can buy a small key pad to attach to it, should you prefer. (My OH started out using the keypad but I haven't seen it in months, so I guess he's dispensed with it).

What do you want to do with it?

Ipads have their own operating system. Other tablets tend to use Android. The apps available are different.

Just to tinker on the internet, store photos, send emails.
I don't understand what you just said in the second part...

Like how PC computers use Windows and all those programmes, and Macs use..other ones.

I-thingies have their own set of programmes ("apps"); most other tablets use a system called Android.

I think most programmes/apps are available in i-versions and Android versions.

I 'wanted' an iPad and after selling a few things bought one. Now that I have it, I find it truly useful and love it.

The touch screen is great and really works. All things Apple are expensive, you will pay for the brand but I have been very happy with mine. I am very happy with the quality and it does exactly what I want it to do (I am not an expert user and probably don't challenge it at all). I did have a problem early on (user error), when I contacted the helpdesk they responded very quickly and solved my problem first time

I use mine for internet browsing, photos, reading (although I prefer the Kindle as it is lighter), a few games, music and the battery seems to last well.

one of the things to consider is how big a tablet you want. I decided to get a small one - the criterion being it had to fit in my bag.

Then you have to decide if you want to go with apple - any i-thingy is apple and basically you are tied to them - you can only buy your programs (apps) from them etc. In many ways this is the easier option. I wanted to not tie myself to apple and besides other tablets are cheaper.

Next you have to decide if you want it to be able to dial up like a phone (with associated costs) or just use wifi. wifi is widely available, and you can get a dongle (a thing to dial up with) later if you wanted to dial up after all.

In the end I bought a samsung galaxy tab 2 7", with wifi.

Its a toy really, for me, I like to be able to check on my online shops, surf a little, organise my life and play sudoku as a bonus it takes nice photos too.
