I LOVE my new tablet. I can read the paper on it as well as my huge collection of ebooks *cough* and the added bonus is that any books I download for the children display in colour. And it does facebook and messenger and I can read my email AND it's in a flowery case.

Just sayin'.

what reader do you use on your tablet for ebooks ?- I need to de-Luddite a bit on that front (though I'm not giving up real books)

I love my tablet-toy too - and mine is in a lovely green case. Green being my favourite colour an all.

My 'phone not only has buttons, but all it does is make/receive calls and send/receive texts.

It doesn't take photographs.
It doesn't play 'tunes'.
It doesn't pretend it's a wireless.
It doesn't surf (waves or internet).

I don't think anyone will label me 'techy'. 'Tetchy', perhaps, but 'techy' - no.

I've got a samsung galaxy tab 7", the one that you can use as a phone and send texts too. I love it, dont have to search around for reading glasses and like having the phone and internet all in one gadget.
I think my next one will be the samsung note 8 with phone/text bit (not just wi-fi). I don't think its available in the UK yet. One slight drawback is the size, but as I usually have a bag of some sort with me to carry it in, its not a problem, but its not something that'll just go in most pockets

Did you buy an MP3 player in the end. Be useful if they could talk to each other.

Still pondering on that purchase too...
How would they talk to each other?

See - this is what I *need* to know. Especially the bit about the flowery case...

Reading the paper is one of the main things I do with my tablet. Rather annoyingly every morning it tells me that my subscription has expired so I have to purchase a subscription again and then it tells me I can't because I already have a subscription. Then it lets me read the paper.

On the plus side it has never actually charged me for the paper!

If, for example you got an iPod and an iPad, the first is an MP3 player, the second your tablet, then both can automatically share things, so photos, tunes, documents, contacts and so on will always be on both. Take a photo with your iPod, it's there on you iPad.

They can talk to each other either by plugging them into a pc and they use a database called iTunes. Or they can use the cloud which is, in simple terms, magic. It just happens, over the Internet.

This might also work between android devices, I don't know.

It will not be as simple if you get mixed operating systems.

So, before you leap in, work out what you want to do, and go play. I would really, rally suggest going, as an ignorant person, to a real apple store. They will run a 'class' for you, free, one on one to show you anything. What you learn can be used to buy whatever.

The cloud is magic

The only downside we find is that our iPads get filled up with photos, primarily photos taken by our youngest daughter of her dolls I warned OH not to download iMovie, but he didn't listen and now there are mini films of them too

Not sure I'd be seen dead in public with you lot.

Honestly, apple stores are great. Really the best customer service in the world. They know they have to cope with old people like us. Go online, find your local one, and look at some of the tutorials.

Wait til you share contacts with your elder son and start getting his iMessages on your iPad. It's a real eye opener.

A lesson well learned is how to moderate or turn off sharing between Idevices.

I will, if you can hang on until the start of August. We could terrify the shop assistants together and sell tickets for charity.
