I've been offered a pair of these hairy piggies, no idea how much but mates rates will apply.

They seem to be fairly hardy buggers so the actual owning, raising etc. 'should' be fairly straight forward as I have the current owner only a few miles down the road.

I'm quite interested in their 'table' qualities, anyone got any experience? will it be a porkine delight or will I be stuck with a hairy sausage no one wants?

Chap near us breeds them, they are meant to make good meat for speciality stuff apparently. Not tried it but have toyed with getting some just to see what it is like.

I'm told that some abbatoirs don't like them. Nick has kept them in the past.

Abbatoirs don't like anything with hair, not a reason not to keep them though.

I've got a couple of Mangalitza cross GOS at the moment. The chap I got them from has bred pure Mangies ( ) before and says they're very tasty. A bit prone to put on fat though so don't be tempted to overfeed 'em!

I've not heard of any problems with the abattoirs around me.

You have a pm, cos I hadn't seen this.

But, for public consumption, they are incredibly fatty. Really fatty, and hairy. Check your abattoir will take them.

Taste was fine. Same as berkshires, or osbs, tbh.

Meh, I think as a first timer I might go for a different breed then, unless they are incredibly cheap. The land is fenced and ready so at least I got that done.

a big gilt iirc ,
oak smoked in a tent.
i have one shoulder left which is a pity cos miss bacon turned out well.

cracked eggs was the turning point re her misplacing her trust in me and so being welcome enough at rosewood to get to bacon size which took ages ,the others all went young as they were rather fierce even for paul who is ace with pigs

as a beginner at pig wrangling but with exposure to several breeds in deep litter pens i recon there are much easier types than mangas

tamworths are happy and friendly, old spots are really funny in a nice way.saddlebacks are fairly calm etc

best advice is kindness even when being firm and treats, much like dogs or people

and never turn your back on a mangalitza

ps all of them seemed bitey including miss bacon but she was the least fierce and sort of made friends with me (or hired me as a treat servant as she probably saw it )

i dont know what boys intact or not taste like but for home made dry cure smoked peasant pig products she was ace .dark meat and almost a wild boar type of meat/fat

i dont think boisterous was among the words paul used

to be serious i recon as a first time pig wrangler they might put one off pigs which are mostly charming and great fun while they reside with you

beware getting too fond of them and not wanting to move on from keeping to preserving ,there have been a few of the ones i have known i could not eat but as a fun and tasty critter pigs are perfect

Tamworth x Large Black also very friendly, funny and loves to have tummy tickles. Although is refusing to give us any offspring!
