Is it too soon to be chitting early crop Jersies?

And when do they go in?

Try some and let us know? It perhaps depends upon where you plan to chit them.

Also on the part of the country. Where I am for example the ground is way too wet at present to even think about onions, garlic, first earlies etc.

Was going to go for some kind of earthing up tower thing since we've got industrial loads of compost.

I've put them in January here in the polytunnel - covered with a couple of layers of bubblewrap. By the time they were through the danger of hard frosts had passed.
I've never really believed that chitting before planting does much good (if any at all). I would have thought the soil temp is the deciding factor as to speed of growth.

I know, but it makes me feel like I'm growing stuff without having to go outside!

I hope it is not too early because I have had some chitting for the last week.
I have never bothered before.

In a word "Microclimate". Where I live, West Lancs Plain, at sea level, the commercial growers put their 1st earlies in about now, and grow them under horticultural fleece.

Nope. I usually start chitting around now, mainly because if I buy seed spuds any later there's not much choice left in the garden centre.

I need to get some seed potatoes for the same reason Rob. I will probably start them off in the spare room where it is quite cool. There is heat coming through from the fire the other side of the wall, but no radiators on.
