I have some rather overgrown raspberry plants in the garden. they haven't been pruned before

they have been in a couple of years.
I didn't get round to cutting them back after fruiting and can no longer see what was last years growth.
will they come to any harm if they all get pruned back to a manageable size?

and while I am in the mood. the black currants? they have fanned out and seem quite tidy but should I prune them too?
Thank you in anticipation. I tried a search as I know I have seen this before but failed.

I think both will be fine whatever you do or don't do to them.

Rasps: secateurs out, cut off at ground level all weedy and dead canes. Remember to pay a bit more attention next year. Blackcurrants: they fruit on last year's growth, I'd leave well alone, have a good prune when fruit-picking.

Blackcurrants, prune about 1/3 of the old wood every year at the base to encourage new growth for fruiting next year & do it when dormant.

If blackcurrants are anything like redcurrants I'd just take out any weak or dead wood. That's how I've always treated my redcurrant bush and I usually get in excess of 20lbs of fruit off it.

Recently for Blackcurrants I have just cut all the branches with currants on off to pick in comfort in the kitchen/deckchair. Seems to work.

The advice for blackcurrants used to be to keep the centre of the bush open, but not sure if this is what is advised now.
